Students in 5th grade are working on a sculpture project. The inspiration came from artist Robert Indiana, who has several different versions of a Love sculpture that are found all over the world. The first one he created was located at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. A few other locations include New York City, JFK plaza in Philadelphia, the Civic Center in Scottsdale Arizona, the Langen Foundation in Germany, Spain, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Content Objectives: I can create a 3-D paper mache letter. I can explain how to paper-mache a 3D Letter. I can explain & identify the differences between 2-D and 3-D artworks. Vocabulary: Armature, 3-Demensional, Paper-Mache, Form Grades K-6EQ: How can Art help make the world a more peaceful or better place? Today the 6th grade Falcons helped set up the public art display known as Pinwheels for Peace. This project occurs each year officially on September 21, which is International Day of Peace. This is a global peace initiative to spread world peace. So be on the lookout! Pinwheels may be in your local community along the roadside, in school yards, in parks, pinwheels everywhere! Check out our display in the grass as you drive by or walk by the front entrance of the school. Art speaks and is able to reach all kinds of people. We are starting off the school year on two collaborative art projects that promote peace - Pinwheels for Peace and a My Two Hands bulletin board. The essential question I asked students to consider was the following. EQ: How can Art help make the world a more peaceful or better place? The purpose and ideas behind each art project will thoughtfully include the community and/or encourage collaboration within our school. We will also be exploring and analyzing artists and how their works of art were used to communicate and spread world peace. Artists that we may discuss in class could include: 1) Pablo Picasso, Guernica 2) Norman Rockwell, We the Peoples & Golden Rule 3) My Two Hands (song) written by Ben Harper & collaboration with Jack Johnson Look for the students personalized works of art to be exhibited in the near future. United Nations Drawing - We the Peoples What inspires artists artwork? Artists are inspired by many things. It may be emotions, their surroundings, nature, memories, tv, movies, books, or other artists or their artwork. What goes on in our lives is personal and meaningful to us. When we communicate this through our artwork we are in some ways sharing a part of who we are as individuals. One of my favorite times of the year is fall. The tree leaves and vibrant colors in nature are truly a natural phenomenon and beauty to look at. We used this as inspiration for a still life study. Students are carefully observing and learning techniques on how to draw realistically. Line, Proportion, Texture, Space, and Form are some of the Elements of Art that we are applying to our works. We have an upcoming event planned that will help you understand and get to experience the traditional Spanish holiday - Dia De los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This significant and joyous occasion is all about remembering and honoring loved ones who have passed. I hope you come and join us. Date: Thursday, November 2 Time: 5:30 p.m.- 7 p.m. Location: Vida Charter School Art Displays - School Lobby
Art Activities - Cafeteria
Get a sneak peek at the works in progress that will be part of the art display for this special occasion below. We have been diligently working on these educational art projects which celebrate and take pride in our students Spanish heritage. Can't wait to see you there! How many decisions do we make in life that involve color? Colors inspire us. Our choices of decoration, make up, clothing, cars, and sometimes career paths depends on our knowledge of color. The most useful tool, which helps us organize or think about how to use color is a color wheel. Here are some of students ideas on how we use the color wheel in every day life, that naturally occur and/or may go unnoticed : 1) Clothing 2) Decorations 3) Make up 4) Cars - (body shop repairing paint work & engineers designing interior/exterior of car) 5) House & School - (wall colors & functional as well as decorative interior design of space) 6) Presentations (Slide Show, Business Report, Sales, etc....) 7) Websites 8) Games (video or board games) Color is an important foundation for students to learn. Our experimentation with color is a never ending process. I personally remember doing simple or complex color wheels all the way into college. So it should be no surprise the beginning of this school year all grade levels are studying color, one of the Elements of Art. Grade K - 2 = Primary & Secondary Colors Grade 3 - 6 = Primary, Secondary, & Intermediate Colors Grades K-6This is our second year participating in a public art project called Pinwheels for Peace. The idea originally was started by two art teachers in Florida during 2005. The very first display started with 500,000 pinwheels and has grown into a world wide display of over 4 million pinwheels! To start off our school year, every student created a paper pinwheel to encourage world peace in art class. We discussed ways we could be peaceful with one another. Our pinwheels visually express each child's interpretation of peaceful ideas, thoughts, feelings, and colors. This project is designed to coincide with International Day of Peace which occurs each year on September 21. Take a look at some detail pictures and our outdoor display at the front entrance of the school. The official celebration for this school year took place on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Grade 5Get ready Star Wars fans! Rouge One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. In art class, we used this iconic movie as inspiration to learn how to create the illusion of form. We know that shapes and drawings are flat, two-demensional, objects. What if we want our work to be more life like and realistic? How do we take that 2-D surface and make it appear more 3-D? In painting and drawing, form must be implied. You must create the illusion of space and depth, which will trick the eye. One approach that works very well is to use different values of a color (lights and darks) to give the illusion of 3-D form. By carefully studying and applying highlights and shadows to the storm troopers body, the students produced some stunning work. Grade 5 Using a shoe as a still life, students focused on drawing from observation. Contour line drawing is a technique where the artist sketches the outline and inner form of an object or person. During this process, you do not worry about any kind of shading. This essential skill helps students to learn how to carefully observe and draw what they actually see instead of recalling from memory or the brain's recollection of the image. Check out this video on blind contour drawing. We practiced this technique before we started the shoe life drawings. Here are some of the students drawings in progress. We will be adding color in a following class period before the final project is complete. |
