Day of the Dead, or El Dia de los Meurtos, is a happy and honorable tradition to remember and honor family, friends, and loved ones who have passed. The Mexican holiday is a happy and joyful occasion. November 1 is the day children are remembered and November 2 is the day to honor the adults.
Homes and grave sites are decorated with beautiful altars, known as offerendas - containing foods, flowers, objects, toys, cloths, and gifts that remind them of their loved ones. Two of the most common foods you may find are candy sugar skulls and a loaf of bread called Pan de Meurto.
The main symbol and costumes of this holiday are skeletons, called calaveras. The students works of art represents and celebrates the life, happiness, color, food, family, and fun which occur on this special holiday.
Here's a break down of the art projects and work each grade level produced.

We also created altars in the lobby and had a special weekend event at school. Students, parents, and the community learned about this celebration through a special presentation in the gym followed by music, skeleton dancing, mask making, and games.
